October Update: Margins, Orders and Overviews

At thesheet, we’ve always been inspired by the humble spreadsheet. The flexibility it provides for managing projects—from simple room redesigns to full turnkey solutions—is hard to beat.

With over 90% of interior designers and architects we’ve spoken to still relying on Excel or Google Sheets to handle their project spec sheets, it’s no wonder we’ve drawn inspiration from these tools.

But let’s be honest—wouldn't it be nice if those spreadsheets could do more? That’s the question we kept asking ourselves in this latest update. How can we take the familiar format of a spec sheet and make it, well, better?

The result: today we’re introducing margin tables, a new project overview, an ordering phase, a budgeting widget, and phase-specific statuses. An update packed with features that go beyond just data entry.

Ready to dive into the details? Let’s take a look at how these new updates can help you and your studio work more efficiently.

Quick margin calculations

Ah, margins—the thing that can make even the most seasoned designer groan. We’ve spoken to over 100 professionals, and trust us, the frustration is real.

Margin and markup tables in Excel can quickly spiral out of control, especially when different clients, suppliers, and projects all have unique pricing strategies. This leads to multiple messy spreadsheets with endless formulas. Sound familiar?

We’ve thought hard about how to solve this, and we think we’ve hit on a solution: an interactive margin table that adapts to your studio’s pricing strategy, no matter how custom it may be. Here’s how it works:

  • Automatic RRP: The Recommended Resale Price is pulled directly from your spec sheet—no more entering the same information multiple times.

  • Trade Discounts: Enter your supplier’s negotiated price or trade discount, and the table calculates the final price for you—automatically.

  • Custom Markups: Adjust product markups on a per-client or per-supplier basis. Whether you’re adding a small markup, or sticking with the RRP, the margin table can handle it.

  • Profit Control: See your product profits at a glance, giving you the power to tweak pricing and get the best value for your business.

New project overview

Managing a growing project can feel like a juggling act. Especially when you're trying to keep track of what’s been ordered, what’s been delivered, and what’s still pending. In our October update, we’re introducing the Project Overview—a brand new view that uses the data from your spec sheets and project statuses to give you a snapshot of your entire project in one place.

How does it work?

  • Proposed: Moving a product from Draft to Proposed in your sheet view, will add the product to this phase. Your client will see these in their client view.

  • Approved: Once approved by you, your team, or your client, the products shift to the Approved phase, ready for quoting and ordering.

  • Ordered: Products move to the Ordered phase when their quotes are approved, and you can see each one’s status, whether it’s in production, in transit, or installed.

With this new overview, you can finally see everything at a glance—no more sifting through multiple spreadsheets or files.

Overview

Order directly from thesheet

Ordering products can be a logistical headache, usually involving countless emails, calendar reminders, and file attachments. And let’s be honest, it often just ends up being a folder in Google Drive stuffed with purchase orders from suppliers. But we’re aiming to make this process smoother with our new Ordering View.

What can you do in this new view?

  • As we have already mentioned interactive margin tables to adjust trade pricing, markups, client pricing and get an overview of potential product profits.

  • Send Purchase Orders directly to your suppliers without leaving thesheet. Attach relevant documents and keep all communication in one place.

  • Two-Way Document Sharing: Suppliers can upload invoices and delivery information, keeping everything organised and easy to access.

  • Track Delivery: Keep tabs on your estimated delivery dates and update each product’s status as it moves from PO sent to installed.

We’re not done yet—this feature is still evolving, but it’s a big step toward making thesheet a complete turnkey solution for your studio.

Budgeting throughout the project

Budgeting is a big deal—not just for you, but for your clients too. That’s why we’ve made it easy to track your project budget from start to finish. Now, your budget overview is available in every view:

  • Project Budget: The client’s original budget, which you can adjust as the project evolves.

  • Used: A running total of all proposed products and alternatives, giving you a quick look at how close you are to hitting your budget cap.

  • Remaining: How much of the budget is still available—assuming everything goes perfectly to plan.

This simple widget lets you stay on top of your project’s finances without jumping between spreadsheets. And, stay tuned—we have even more updates coming to the budgeting widget soon.

Conclusion

We know, it’s a lot! But we’ve been hard at work to bring you these updates, and we’re excited to see how they enhance your workflow. Our ultimate goal is to create a full turnkey solution for interior designers, and with every update, we’re getting a little closer.

Thanks to all the interior designers who gave us feedback during the development of this update—we couldn’t have done it without your insights. And if you have more ideas or want to chat about your current workflow, we’d love to hear from you.
